In 1976, Barbara was invited by the Royal Academy of Dancing to train as a Grade Examiner and in 2002 as a Vocational Examiner giving her Dual status. This enables her to travel the world examining and teaching students and teachers. This is part of Barbara’s Personal Professional Development which is so necessary for the position she holds with her studio. The experience and knowledge that she gains from these examining tours allows her to return to give her students and staff the most up to date information required and also allows her to see where the students of BDC/ADPI stand in the world.
Over the past holidays, Barbara has been appointed as a RAD Standardisation Examiner and a RAD Solo Seal Examiner. These positions are of great importance within the RAD. She is also a Mentor and Tutor for the RAD Classical Ballet Teaching Studies (CBTS), the RAD Teaching qualification that is required for people who teach and enter students for RAD exams. Barbara enjoys passing on her knowledge and skills to the up and coming teachers as she feels that it is essential that all teachers have the training in how to teach, how to develop their eye, to have the anatomical knowledge so that the one physique that a student has is not forced beyond its capabilities, to have musical knowledge so that the student can be encouraged to become one with the music and to be able to produce a dancer who shows great passion and emotion and last but not least to develop the love and joy of dance in their students.
Barbara has also been Artistic Director of a Youth Ballet Company for 14 years “Young Friends of the Ballet” where all monies raised went to the Australian Ballet School. Barbara became the first private provider to offer Vocational Education and Training in Brisbane.
Such a concept at that time was innovative and dance training in Brisbane entered into a new phase as a result. ADPI now offers qualifications to an Advanced Diploma level (full time) and a Certificate III program (1 day a week) for students at school so that they could gain up to 8 credit points off their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). The Diploma and Advanced Diploma qualification give students a Ranking and OP equivalent from 2 to 6 (Advanced Diploma) and 8 to 11 (Diploma).
Barbara has an Advanced Teaching Diploma and is an Associate and Life Member of the Royal Academy of Dance, has a CN404 Instructional Skills Course Certificate and a TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. She teaches in the Junior, Senior and Full time School. She is also on the Board of Directors for Ballet Theatre of Queensland.
